When the war on Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons appears lost to the Autobots, their leader, Sentinel Prime, attempts to launch the Ark from their planet, containing technology that could have saved his kind. Attacked by Starscream, it crashes on Earth’s moon in 1961. President John F. Kennedy makes his famous promise to the nation to put a man on the moon. The 1969 NASA moon landing is actually an investigation of the wrecked spacecraft.

As Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is taking his first tenuous steps into adulthood, while remaining a reluctant human ally of Optimus Prime and the Autobots, the Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft on the Moon and must race against the Decepticons to find it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide into the apocalyptic final battle. ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ is released in cinemas June 29th in 2D, Real D 3D and IMAX 3D. Where do we pick Sam up in ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon?’

Shia LaBeouf: In this third movie his maturation has continued, he’s now gone through two wars, there’s a bit of a PTSD thing going on, on top of the neurosis that was already instilled in him from his youth and from his family. He’s in the middle of a new relationship, in the middle of joining the work force. The government can’t just hire you as the guy who saved the world twice and put you in an office. With all the credentials he has, and after getting an award from the president he goes off seeking a job for his future.

What was it like shooting in such a huge city like Chicago? You had a lot freedom to shoot there.

Shia LaBeouf: I’ve never seen anything like it, it was a sandbox essentially. We flew into Chicago and the whole city was at our disposal, Michael Bay would send rigging teams all over the city, all the time, randomly. They’d rig things, rope off the street and it was Transformers property. It was everywhere, even on my off days I’d skateboard around and I’d see rigging, random rigging everywhere.

I remember filming on Indiana Jones and we were filming in Yale, Indiana Jones is a BIG movie, people would fly in, you’d have sixty or seventy people in the streets dressed up as Indy, on the set, roped off. You get to Chicago and there’s twenty thousand people in the streets roped off, you feel like you’re some kind of rock act. I’d feel like we were Steppenwolf. We’d walk out there, I’m with Tyrese Gibson, who is the big smile and that guy, he’s playing the crowd and things (laughs), I’m sort of shy, it’s wild to look out at twenty thousand people looking at you go to work. I’ve never experienced that before.

There must have been huge pressure with this film. How was it balancing so many aspects of it, the action, humour?

Shia LaBeouf: I think it is without doubt our best film. The first movie is incredible because it’s the discovery, with ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ I believe it’s the perfection of all elements. Everyone fired on just another level on this movie. We all showed up, we’re all prideful men and women, everyone really came to play. It was a different vibe on set.

There’s a huge balancing act in these movies, this being the darker of the three, Michael Bay was very intent in that we would keep some humour involved. The way we found the humour, sometimes it was written, but most of the time, I’d say ninety percent of the time we were rifting, adlibbing, trying to find it on the day. The beauty of shooting on digital is that it’s conducive to that, you never have to cut, you never have to stop, you can stay in it until you find good ideas. It alleviates the stopping and starting, the pacing when you are shooting on 3D and digital was very conducive to finding the humour in this movie.

Do you have a particular favourite scene in the film?

Shia LaBeouf: So many for different reasons. Chicago in general, I’ve never seen anything like that, in sheer spectacle alone Chicago was nuts. All the scenes with my parents are always fun. I think the job interviews were fun with John Malkovich, that whole job montage sequence was fun. I also have this thing where the Decepticons are using humans, they’re coaxing them and using them as tools. I have a Transformer on watch who basically punishes me whenever I step out of bounds of the realm of how they want me to conduct myself. It turns into this sort of Buster Keaton type sketch, there’s a whole lot of physical comedy elements that play into Sam’s neurosis on top of what’s already there, there’s also this physical Buster Keaton type thing that we explore for a bit that is very fun, at least for me (laughs).

Talking to MTV at the MTV Movie Awards, Shia LaBeouf spoke on ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ being he and director Michael Bay’s final Transformers outing: “For sure. I’m not coming back to do another one. I don’t think Mike will either. It still is a hot property, I think, especially coming out of the third one. So I imagine they’ll reboot it at some point with someone else.”

Touching on the possibility of a future reboot, LaBouf spoke on whether it will be strange to see someone else hanging out with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee: “Yeah,” LaBeouf admitted. “You have an onus in it. I’ll enjoy it. I’ll go [see it] opening night, I’ll be there. But there is a disconnect. It’s mine, dude,” he joked of his role in the blockbuster franchise. “It’s mine.”

Finally Labouf definitely seems confident that he and Bay are going out with a bang: “['Dark of the Moon'] is the best movie we’ve made, I’m serious,” he assured us. “It’s not a joke.
