Rihanna ‘Battleship’ Interview – Out Now On Blu-Ray & DVD
Sep 2nd
Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs ‘Battleship,’ an action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, ‘Battleship’ stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Tadanobu Asano as Captain Yugi Nagata, commanding officer of the Japanese destroyer Myoko and Hopper’s archrival; and Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane. Making her feature-film debut in ‘Battleship’ is Grammy Award-winner Rihanna, playing the tough-as-nails gunner Petty Officer Second Class Cora Raikes – Hopper’s crewmate and U.S. Navy weapons specialist. ‘Battleship’ is out now on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and a Two-Disc Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet). Alongside Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano and Rihanna, the film co-stars Hamish Linklater, Josh Pence, Peter MacNicol, John Tui and Jesse Plemons.
What was your initial reaction to the script for ‘Battleship’ and your character Rakes?
Rihanna: After I got the script, I was so impressed by it and I just loved the story. I couldn’t put it down, which was a clear indication that it would be a film that I would enjoy watching. What I ended up enjoying about working with Peter Berg was his energy, how adventurous and spontaneous he is. And Raikes, she kicks a lot of ass (laughs). She’s one of the boys, and it was fun to explore that because I was a tomboy as a kid. The character is filled with raw energy, and it was a moment for me to be someone completely different than what people are used to seeing. It was exciting for people to see me as an actress and look at me as Raikes and not Rihanna.
Taylor Kitsch Interview For Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’
Jul 5th
Three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller ‘Savages,’ featuring the all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir. The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010. Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Aaron Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Taylor Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry—raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Blake Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them. When the merciless head of the BC, Elena (Salma Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bond among these three friends, Ben and Chon – with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (John Travolta) – wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills. ‘Savages’ arrives in cinemas July 6th in the US and September 26th in the UK.
An ex-Navy SEAL, Chon uses his skill set to fiercely defend the people whom he loves the most?
Taylor Kitsch: Definitely. Chon is a guy who has been jaded from day one. He’s seen so much sh*t in Afghanistan that his first reaction is always to go to violence. He’s just jaded to the point where he knows that it’s inevitably gonna go to violence, so he just goes there. Because he’s tried it so many times the other way that its never worked for him. I think even at the beginning when we were discussing the look of Chon, where we were going, I loved the scars, they were huge to me – they’re such a prevalent part of who he is. It’s such a great character to play on so many levels. I haven’t gone this route with a guy who’s this jaded, it was a blast. But also, you’ll see a different guy when he’s with Ben and O.

This contemporary story, ‘Savages,’ has a distinct look it to it. What was the style and feeling you went for with the film? Other than the book, what references did you use to help that vision?
Oliver Stone: Yeah. I read it and it was fresh, it was new. It’s contemporary culture, but dangerous culture because it’s the drug war, with Mexico and the US. It seemed like, above all, a ride. An unpredictable ride, where you did not know what would happen next. And that was the kind of movie I wanted to make with ‘Savages.’ Sun splashed, ‘Duel in the Sun‘ style….if you can remember that far back (laughs). A little bit of Sergio Leone, also a little bit of ’Contempt’ by Jean-Luc Godard. A little bit of ’The Wild Bunch’ by Sam Peckinpah. Although it’s set in the cotemporary west, it feels a little bit like a western.
