What were your initial thoughts when you landed the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk?
Mark Ruffalo: For me, this isn’t usually the type of movie I’ve been in, or that I’ve been invited to do. It was the one character, other than Wolverine, that I actually thought I can do well. I was a little scared because there was no script yet, you know (laughs)? But I was also really excited because of what I’d seen Marvel do with Iron Man and with Robert Downey Jr, who’s a great actor – he’s one of my “hero-actors.” When I saw what he did, I feel like he re-created the genre a little bit, I felt like, “Hey, I could fit into that world.”

Agent Coulson has been fleshed out as a character through these movies….
Clark Gregg: Oh yeah. What I loved about Agent Coulson, right from the first movie, was that at first he seems kind of like an annoying bureaucrat, just pestering Tony Stark for an interview. But as the story goes along, to my great thrill (laughs), he turns out to be a much more formidable character, who’s kind of hiding in plain site as this guy. That has certainly been the model for the rest of the movies. Every time I get the script I’m very excited, I’m like, “Oh, I’m that?! I know that?! I handle this?!” It has sort of culminated to an extent in ’The Avengers’ where Coulson is very much involved with trying to pull the team together. When you look at the team, it’s made up of rock stars and divas with giant muscles and super-powered egos (laughs), so somebody has the job backstage to make them all play in the same super band – and that’s what Agent Coulson does.

What do you think pushes Tony Stark to finally join the Avengers team?
Robert Downey Jr: I think he’s curious. It’s hard for him to ingest what’s going on, so he wants to see it first hand. Although he’s still himself, with the storytelling side of things, he’s searching. In ‘Iron Man 2′,’ with Rhody, he realised he’s not an island, and so there was a partnership, and the same can be said with Pepper. This time it’s very much about that group mind and that “we” is better than “I”. Tony Stark is open to all possibilities and has no problem accepting extraordinary happenings. Joining the Avengers team is an act of curiosity – he really wants to see what’s happening firsthand.

Can you talk about Loki’s evolution from ‘Thor’ to ‘The Avengers’?
Tom Hiddleston: Loki in ‘Thor,’ he was the lost Prince of Asgard. He was the damaged second son, damaged younger brother. In a way ‘Thor’ was the journey of his self-possession, his self-discovery about being who he was. Him not being Odin’s son, therefore he’s Thor’s adopted brother. ‘Thor’ was about him becoming the God of mischief. At the beginning of ‘The Avengers,’ he’s already the God of mischief, he already knows who he is, he knows what he wants. Loki doesn’t need his family anymore, he doesn’t need Odin anymore – or Thor. He’s more like the God of menace in ‘The Avengers.’ Rather than being a lost Asgardien Prince, he’s more like an Asgardien pirate.

How was it for you playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in modern-day? He has a difficult time adjusting to the modern-day world, he’s a bit fish-out-of-water in ‘The Avengers.’
Chris Evans: I love the character, Steve Rogers, he’s everything I wish I could be as a man, you know? He’s good for the sake of good, and that’s a fun character to try to portray. The world around him is a different place. He’s from a different era and I think that era really defines who is. I think the modern-day is a bit more flash and stylish, it’s a bit more selfish, a bit more impersonal. There’s a lot of technologies that put blocks between people. In the 40s there’s maybe a bit more of a direct, honest, sincerity to the way people behaved. I think human interaction breeds manners, you know? It’s a world Steve Rogers isn’t quite accustomed to, it’s a different world that he has to get used to. I think with ‘The Avengers,’ even more than in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ Steve Rogers has some issues, some conflicts and some trouble with the fact that he is a man out of time. But he puts that second and the mission first. He’s selfless.
