Guillermo Del Toro Approves Martin Freeman’s Casting As Bilbo Baggins In ‘The Hobbit’ & Industrial Disputes Settled
Oct 27th
Hot on the heels of the news that Warner Bros and the New Zealand Government have reached an deal settling the industrial disputes for the filming of The Hobbit in New Zealand. Guillermo Del Toro has publicly given his stamp of approval with regards to the casting of Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.
If you weren’t aware Del Toro was originally intended to direct The Hobbit but had to leave the project this summer after MGM’s financial woes dragged on and on and on and on and on. Del Toro told the Shortlist: “I have the perfect actor for every character in the movie, but I don’t feel morally correct to saying who now that I’m not directing.”
“But [as for Martin specifically] absolutely, 100%. I’m a huge fan of his. I love him in The Office and Love Actually.”
With regards to Del Toro leaving the project he added that his decision was “a hard thing when you’ve spent two years on a movie and it’s going nowhere”. The Hobbit films are to be directed by Peter Jackson and are scheduled for release December 2012 and December 2013.

‘Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant. Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum.’
This is all music to my ears. After so much spluttering starts and stops, the reality of these films finally hitting the big screen feels sweeeeeeeeeeeet! Expect some official casting confirmations in due time.
Peter Jackson Officially Directing The Hobbit & The Hobbit Sequel – Production Set To Start In Febuary
Oct 15th
This has made my exceedingly cold Friday – it’s as cold as yeti’s balls over in London right now! The Wrap are reporting that both The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel have been officially greenlit. Peter Jackson will be directing, producing and writing both movies, with production set to start in February. It’s not all plane sailing though – ‘labor issues related to the production have still not been resolved, and negotiations will continue with the Screen Actors Guild. The union flap involves whether the production would use Screen Actors Guild members or not.’
I suppose at the least the financial issues look like they’ve been resolved, fingers crossed the issues with the unions can be ironed out asap. Sets have already been built in New Zealand, and actors – including Sir Ian McKellan – have been on hold for months. Martin Freeman has been rumoured to play Bilbo Baggins. I’m super stoked to see J.R.R. Tolkien’s much beloved novel finaly creeping towards reality.
