Joel Edgerton Joins Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire & Carey Mulligan In Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’

Deadline bring word that Joel Edgerton has joined Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher and Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s stalled adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ as Tom Buchanan. Ben Affleck had been previously linked to the role but had to turn it down due to his work on the Tehran hostage thriller ‘Argo.’
Tom Buchanan is the husband of Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan). Fisher plays Myrtle, a married woman having an affair with Buchanan. In the other lead roles DiCaprio is set to play Jay Gatsby, while Maguire is pencilled in to play Nick Carraway, the novel’s narrator and best friend to Gatbsy. ‘The Great Gatsby’ is set to start shooting in Australia in August. Talking about this casting appointment Baz Luhrmann had to say the following:
“In casting Tom one had to find an actor who could credibly be (as Fitzgerald describes him) ‘one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven,’ had five-star acting chops and in the big dramatic showdown scenes between Gatsby and Tom, hold the screen against Leonardo DiCaprio, in the appropriate age group. Any wonder, it has been a long and thorough journey. The simple truth is that Joel came into our rehearsal space in New York and fulfilled all of the above criteria, and then some.”

TheWrap are reporting that Isla Fisher is in talks to join Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s stalled adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel ‘The Great Gatsby.’ As previously reported Ben Affleck is also in talks to join the film.
Affleck is in discussion for the role of Tom Buchanan, the husband of Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan). Fisher is in talks for the role of Myrtle, a married woman having an affair with Buchanan. Deadline are reporting that Ben Affleck is in talks to join Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s stalled adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel ‘The Great Gatsby.’ If Deadline’s sources are on the money Affleck is in discussion for the role of Tom Buchanan, the husband of Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan). Affleck will have to work to fit this in. After starring in and directing The Town, he’s prepping to direct Argo, a film about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

The Likes Of Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender & Luke Evans In Contention For The Lead In ‘The Bourne Legacy’

Rumoured to be in contention for the lead in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Identity spinoff, ‘The Bourne Legacy,’ include Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch and Benjamin Walker, basically a bunch of white male actors except for Oscar Isaac, please expand your horizons hollywood! I personally would love to see Anthony Mackie in the role. Out of the list above Fassbender would be my pick of the bunch.
Tony Gilroy wrote the previous three Bourne movies along with The Devil’s Advocate and Michael Clayton (which he also directed) – each thoroughly thumbs up worthy movies! Also to point out while the film shares a title with the book ‘The Bourne Legacy’ by Eric Van Lustbader – the first book in the series after original writer Robert Ludlum’s death – Gilroy says it’s a stand alone script that does not follow the same plot. The film will feature a whole new hero in the same universe, which is a bit of a bummer for me. With my somewhat limited intellect it’s hard to think of a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne (I tried thinking of a Batman movie without Batman, but my brain went into sensory overload). The Bourne Legacy comes to cinemas August 3rd, 2012. Source.
Baz Luhrmann May Walk From ‘The Great Gatsby’ – Set To Star Carey Mulligan & Leonardo DiCaprio

This story is a bit unexpected – according to comments made to Vulture it looks like Baz Luhrmann may walk away from his adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby.’ Speaking to the magazine at the DGA Awards on Saturday, Luhrmann said ”I gotta make a decision in three days’ time… [about] whether to do it or not…[I've]been workshopping with Leonardo [DiCaprio] and Tobey [Maguire] and all those great guys…I think I’ve been a bit shaded out because I want everything to be perfectly positioned on it…There will be news by the end of the week.”
It looks like today is decision day for the director whether he will go ahead with the film or not. Earlier reports had the film going into production in the Spring, the likes of Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio are on board.

Random 3D news story of the day: Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter Baz Luhrmann has revealed that his highly anticipated adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby might be shot in 3D. According to the article he has workshopped the project in 3D, though he has not made a call about whether to shoot in the format. I’m baffled over this….The Great Gatsby….in 3D?!? *scratches head with a puzzled look on my face*
Carey Mulligan has been confirmed as the female lead (Daisy Buchanan) in the film. In the other lead roles Leonardo DiCaprio is rumoured to play Jay Gatsby, while Tobey Maguire seems to be a lock for Nick Carraway, the novel’s narrator and best friend to Gatbsy. The Great Gatsby is scheduled to start filming Spring 2011.
