Mia Wasikowska & Dane DeHaan Interview For ‘Lawless’
Sep 5th
Mia Wasikowska and Dane DeHaan joined a stellar cast for John Hillcoat’s Prohibition gangster epic ‘Lawless.’ As Shia LaBeouf, their co-star in ‘Lawless,’ says, “these guys are just great. They are the future.” Both Wasikowska and DeHaan return the compliment and clearly enjoyed being part of a powerful ensemble cast that included LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke. “They are big personalities but they are hard working as well and they put a lot into their work and they care a lot about the work,” says Ms Wasikowska. “They all have that in common. I really loved being part of this cast and it felt special. I did a lot of scenes with Shia and I think he is fantastic in the movie and he’s smart, trying different things and he really wants to do great work and I think he will. And he’s very professional – he is always first on set and always on time working really hard.”
DeHaan agrees and says that LaBeouf helped set the tone for the shoot. “Shia really runs a set. And you can learn from Shia because he is so used to playing that leading man role. He comes prepared and he’s ready to go, he’s cheering everybody on – the grips, the DP, the cast, everybody. He wants everybody to get involved and be part of the team and make the movie work.”
‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Passes $100 Million In IMAX – Second Film To Do So
Sep 4th
Closely following the news that the exhilarating finale to Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga has reached the $1 billion milestone, IMAX and Warner Bros have just announced that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has passed the $100 million global box office mark in 557 IMAX theatres worldwide after its 7th week of release. As of September 3rd, the third and final Dark Knight film reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens in the US and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally. These figures include box office receipts from China, which began playing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on August 27th in 75 IMAX theatres. ”The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience” is still playing in IMAX theatres worldwide. For full theatre locations and showtimes head on over to IMAX.com/Theatres. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ represents the second IMAX DMR® film to cross this $100 million milestone, after James Cameron’s ‘Avatar.’
For the previous film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, ’The Dark Knight,’ Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture release. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on “The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience” – including the film’s gripping prologue – incorporating a record of more than an hour of footage filmed with IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which expand to fill the entire screen exclusively in IMAX, deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers. ’The Dark Knight Rises’ sees Christian Bale returning to the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman alongside series regulars Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and Alfred (Michael Caine). Newcomers to Nolan’s Batman saga include Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake, Marion Cotillard’s Miranda Tate, Matthew Modine’s Foley, Ben Mendelsohn’s Daggett, and Tom Hardy’s dastardly, physically imposing and oddly charismatic villain, Bane.
John Hillcoat & Nick Cave Interview For ‘Lawless’
Sep 3rd
John Hillcoat likes to refer to Nick Cave – a key collaborator on all of his movies including his latest, the stylish gangster epic ‘Lawless’ – as his right hand man or ‘the master”. It’s easy to see why. Cave, the musician and author, is Hillcoat’s creative soul mate. ‘Lawless’ is the third movie Cave has written for Hillcoat and he’s also compiled a brilliant, haunting soundtrack for the film featuring bluegrass artists performing contemporary rock classics, like Velvet Undergound’s White Light/ White Heat.
And sharp-eyed fans of Cave might well spot him making a cameo appearance in ‘Lawless’ too. “Yes, I am actually in Lawless,” Cave smiles. “There’s a scene in Chicago at the very start with a dead gangster in a car – well, I’m the dead gangster.” So Cave is clearly in tune with Hillcoat and was involved with ‘Lawless’ from the very start of the project. A gripping tale of outlaws who make moonshine in the backwoods of Virginia during Prohibition, the film is based on the book by Matt Bondurant, which recounts of the extraordinary exploits of his grandfather, Jack, and his two great uncles.

Newcomers to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy include Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake, Marion Cotillard’s Miranda Tate, Matthew Modine’s Foley, Ben Mendelsohn’s Daggett, and Tom Hardy’s dastardly, physically imposing and oddly charismatic villain, Bane. Jason Clarke & Mia Wasikowska Interview For John Hillcoat’s ‘Lawless’
Aug 31st
Acclaimed director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) delivers a thrillingly vivid slice of American outlaw history in his epic gangster tale, ‘Lawless.’ ‘Lawless’ is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers (played by Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke): three bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. Based on author Matt Bondurant’s fictionalized account of his family, “The Wettest County in the World,” the film gathers an ensemble of gifted, dynamic new-generation stars – Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska, Dane DeHaan – alongside two of the finest actors of their generations, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman. A riveting, intense story of crime and corruption, loyalty and love, brutality and tenderness, ‘Lawless’ is a rich addition to the American gangster canon. Look out for the film in cinemas from August 29th in the US and September 7th in the UK. My other interviews for the film can be read here (more to come): Tom Hardy, John Hillcoat, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf, and Jessica Chastain.
How was it building that fraternal bond with Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy on and off-screen? Your character, Howard, he undoubtedly loves his brothers, yet you can tell that he’s a somewhat haunted man.
Jason Clarke: I loved that he’s right at the middle of something when the film starts. Howard’s carrying a cross, you know? Howard has a story and a conflict that can only be answered in the film, not off screen, not by some big event, but by what’s going on with him and his brothers. And my relationship with Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, on and off-camera, was great from day zip. We are the type of actors who develop character through our interactions. As soon as I was on-board, Shia sent out some texts and pictures and it was just a “let’s get stuck in it” attitude, which is how I like to work. Tom is a very ferocious actor, in terms of his pursuit of character and truth and the choices that he makes. Both of them give you so much to work with that it makes your job easier. That was a joy.
