Vin Diesel & Tyrese Gibson Interview For ‘Fast Five’ – UK Blu-Ray & DVD Release September 5th
Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of returning all-stars from every chapter of the explosive franchise built on speed in Fast Five. In this installment, former cop Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson joins returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race. Since Brian and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) broke Dom out of custody, they’ve blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull off one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he’s not the only one on their tail. Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can’t separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey…before someone else runs them down first. Fast Five is out on Blu-Ray and DVD in the UK September 5th. It’s set for home release in the US October 4th.
I know you’ve been friends with Dwayne Johnson for years, how was it to have him on-board with Fast Five?
Vin Diesel: It was awesome, not only were Dwayne and I talking about doing something for years, not only is it is obvious that there’s a fantastical element to taking whatever action heroes you’ve got on the table in your era, potentially the two biggest ones, the two guys who represent formidability then put them together. That’s fun for any audience member, that’s fun for cinema. The fact that there’s that fights scene between Dom and Hobbs, is an event in cinema let alone Fast and Furious. So much fun.
Tyrese Gibson: I was glad the fight was balanced, you can go in and say this is Vin’s franchise, and Dwayne Johnson is coming in for Fast Five, you expect because of that for Vin to wipe him out, but it’s balanced. I can’t tell you who wins (laughs), but I like that it’s balanced.
The heist robbery must have been a lot of fun to film?
Vin Diesel: It was an attempt for us to one up the classic stage-coach train robbery. The sequences that we are all too familiar with. We wanted to do our own Fast and Furious version of that, without horses, but a whoooooollllleeee lot of horse power (laughs).
What do think makes this franchise still so relevant?
Tyrese Gibson: I think there’s an international love for cars, there’s an international love for swag, there’s an international love for beautiful women – multi-culture, multi-ethnic. There’s a formula that this movie has that can’t get old. You are able to say you’re gonna laugh, you are gonna have a good time, you are gonna be on the edge of your seat, there’s gonna be big action, there’s gonna be something visually appealing, it’s a ride – shout out to all the adrenaline junkies (laughs).
Vin, there’s a lot more humour in this film than the last….
Vin Diesel: I think Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris both brought a fresh comedic timing to Fast Five. We were dealing with very heavy issues in the last movie, with Fast Five we wanted to embrace a more light hearted banter throughout. Both Tyrese and Ludacris’ character bring that, they bring some light-heartedness, and they allow the audience to have fun in a way. I think there’s funny moments with so many character, I think some of the funniest guys are Tego and Don Omar (laughs), they were great.
How was it for you coming back to the franchise Tyrese?
Tyrese Gibson: They came up with a very creative story line that makes it all make sense that we’re together. Because my question was, ‘wait, so we’re all coming back, how are you gonna make that make sense?’ It was very clever, I think the writer Chris Morgan did a very great job with Vin Diesel and the producers to come up with a great story line to make it all make sense. There’s character arc for all of us, there’s a beginning, middle and end, and some characters an open end. I was very excited to come back.
