Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ Reaches The $1.5 Billion Milestone
Sep 3rd
Closely following yesterday’s news that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ has become the 13th film to reach the $1 billion milestone, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ reached its own new landmark this weekend by passing the immense figure of $1.5 billion worldwide – big chee$e! Widely praised by fans and critics alike, ‘The Avengers’ is currently sitting comfortably at the third spot on the all-time world box office list with a hefty haul of $1,501,800,000, trailing only James Cameron’s ’Titanic’ ($2.185 billion) and ‘Avatar’ ($2.782 billion). As of Sunday, the Joss Whedon-helmed flick is sitting at a US gross of $620.1 million and an international gross of $882.3 million. Marvel recently signed a deal for Whedon to return for ‘The Avengers 2′ as well as help develop a live-action ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ series for Marvel Television at ABC. The filmmaker will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe. The tentatively-titled ‘The Avengers 2′ will follow ’Iron Man 3,’ ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and presumably hopefully Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man.’ Marvel Studios has set a May 1st, 2015 release date for ‘The Avengers 2.’
Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in ‘Iron Man,’ ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ ‘Iron Man 2,’ ‘Thor,’ and ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ the global box office for ‘The Avengers’ has obliterated the totals of those individual films. The totals for those preceding films are: ‘Iron Man’ with $585.1 million worldwide, ‘The Incredible Hulk’ with $263.4 million worldwide, ’Iron Man 2′ with $623.9 million worldwide, ’Thor’ with $449.3 million worldwide, and finally ‘Captain America’ with $368.6 million worldwide. Directed by Joss Whedon, ‘The Avengers’ (‘Avengers Assemble’ in the UK) stars Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye/Clint Barton), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). The likes of Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, and Stellen Skarsgard co-star.
’The Avengers’ is available as a 2D Blu-ray Combo Pack, a 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack and on DVD from September 17th in the UK and September 25th in the US. The “Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled” collector’s set arrives in the US on September 25th, while it currently has no UK release date. The nearest thing to it on these shores is the Blu-ray “Marvel’s The Avengers – 6-Disc Box Set”, which lands on September 17th. The synopsis and production notes for Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ can be read below. My interviews for the film can be found here: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, and Joss Whedon.
Joss Whedon Speaks On ‘The Avengers’ Deleted Scenes, Returning For ‘The Avengers 2′ & The ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ TV Show
Aug 30th
With the DVD and Blu-ray release of ‘The Avengers’ fast approaching and the deluge of major developments from Marvel recently, Vulture caught up with writer/director Joss Whedon to talk all things ‘The Avengers’ and Marvel. Widely praised by fans and critics alike, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ is currently sitting comfortably at the third spot on the all-time world box office list with a hefty haul of $1.436 billion, trailing only James Cameron’s ’Titanic’ ($2.185 billion) and ‘Avatar’ ($2.782 billion). Marvel recently signed a deal for Whedon to return for ‘The Avengers 2′ as well as help develop a new live-action series for Marvel Television at ABC. The filmmaker will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe. ‘The Avengers 2′ will follow ’Iron Man 3,’ ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and presumably hopefully Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man.’ Marvel Studios has set a May 1st, 2015 release date for ‘The Avengers 2.’
Speaking about the deleted scenes from ‘The Avengers’ that have made their way online this week – in particular the alternate opening where Cobie Smulders’ Agent Maria Hill is being interrogated following the films finale, Joss Whedon revealed what made him decide to cut the scene, “Two factors. One: The movie was three hours long. Two: Audiences didn’t respond to it as well in the movie as I think they would as a DVD extra. Most of them didn’t know who this character was or what the context was, and they were like, Uhhh, I don’t know why I’m supposed to be personally involved in this character I don’t know. The rollout to the Avengers getting to Loki was so gradual that people were getting restless. I thought Cobie nailed it, and the reason I thought it was necessary is because I was trying to make a war movie and I wanted to give context that something bad had happened in the past. In a war movie, you don’t know who’s going to live or die, but you do know that this war happened and that [the characters] are going to be in a dire circumstance, and I wanted to create that atmosphere.”
‘The Avengers’ Deleted Scene Centers On Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America
Aug 29th
With the DVD and Blu-ray release of ‘The Avengers’ fast approaching, Latino-review have got their mitts on this new extended deleted scene from the film introducing Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America. Of all the deleted scenes I’ve seen from ‘The Avengers,’ this is by a stretch my favourite – I’m loving the Stan Lee cameo! Marvel have provided the following scene description to accompany the scene: “War in Europe” reads a newspaper headline as we cut to stock footage of Nazis in World War II with newsreel voiceover. “America heeds the call to fight for freedom! And at the front of the fight, shoulder to shoulder with our battling boys is Captain America!” Cut to some newsreel footage of Cap in his old costume walking through European War zones. The newsreel describes Cap as a product of science, a name every Nazi fears. They say the new weapons are no match for Cap and we see some black and white news reel footage of Cap fighting one of the Hydra soldiers with a Tesseract gun.
“He’s the man who knocks the Axis on their backs-is.” says the newsreel as we see Steve Rogers is watching it on a laptop present day. He shuts off the video and looks sad in the laptop refletion. We reveal Steve Rogers’ apartment as he leafs through the files of his teammates from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ all of them stamped “Deceased.” BUT WAIT! Carter, Margaret “Peggy” – this file is unstamped. Close up so we can see Haley Atwell’s face and see she’s listed as “RETIRED” and “INACTIVE.” Cap looks sad, then we pan down to Peggy Carter’s current address in Winchester, UK and a telephone number.
Marvel’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ TV Series Comes To ABC – Joss Whedon Co-Writing & May Direct
Aug 29th
[Updated with a quote from Joss Whedon] Closely following Disney and Marvel’s dual announcement that Joss Whedon has signed up to return to write and direct ‘The Avengers 2′ as well as help develop a television series for Marvel Television at ABC, Deadline bring word that ABC has ordered a pilot for ‘S.H.I.E.L.D,’ a live-action series from Whedon, Marvel TV and ABC Studios. The ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ series is based on Marvel’s extra-government intelligence and security organization S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate), found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes – including in Whedon’s ‘The Avengers,’ in which S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), recruits Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to stop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from subjugating Earth.
While there’s currently no word if actors and characters from the Marvel cinematic universe will feature in this series, production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately. This ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ projects marks a return to series television for Joss Whedon, creator and showrunner of the cult favorites ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Firefly’ and ‘Dollhouse.’ In addition to ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ Marvel TV has a couple of other projects in development at ABC Studios, including a proposed ‘Hulk’ series from Guillermo del Toro and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ producer David Eick. ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ will reportedly be written by Whedon and frequent collaborators, brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. If his schedule is permitting, Joss Whedon is also set to direct the pilot.
